VT Monster 2024: 2 weeks to go!
After a cool and rainy spring, summer is just around the corner, and we’re two weeks away from the VT Monster! Hopefully, you've pushed through your challenging workouts and logged some good miles in preparation for this year's event. While most of your fitness-building should be done by now, here's a checklist to guide your pre-race prep.
On the bike:
Ensure your bike and equipment are ready for Vermont's hills and gravel. Avoid making major changes to your saddle, shoes, or bike position unless absolutely necessary.
Check that your brake pads and tires are in good condition, and that your drivetrain is shifting smoothly and quietly.
Tighten your water bottle cages, GPS mounts, and other accessories.
With two weeks to go, you still have time for a few quality training rides. Focus on challenging your weaknesses and doing a couple of longer, easy rides – these workouts will help you build confidence as you gear up for race day.
Off the bike:
Prioritize rest and recovery in these final weeks. Quality sleep, good nutrition, and addressing any aches and pains should be your top priorities. Your goal is to arrive at the start-line with fresh legs and plenty of mental and physical reserves. Being well-rested and motivated is crucial for a successful race.
Your fueling and hydration regimen should be set by now, and be sure to order any supplies you’re running low on. As temperatures and humidity rise, you might need to adjust your electrolyte intake or carry extra water to cool off with. If you do make a change, be sure to test any new products during training before race day!
Keep up with foam-rolling, core, and mobility workouts. Even a few minutes a day of rolling, planks, or stretching can make for a more comfortable race.
Race-Day Gear and Schedule:
Prepare your gear and race-day schedule ahead of time.
Collect and organize your food, drink mixes, floor pump, chain lube, and other supplies.
Plan for a warm, sunny day… but pack rain gear just in case.
Double-check your start time and allow ample time for the drive, bathroom breaks, parking, and registration.
Spend the time now to make sure everything is in place so you can focus on enjoying the race with your hard-earned fitness. Remember to stay positive and to take in the views while you’re riding, and good luck to everyone at this year’s VT Monster!
